my first visit in May 1987 - première visite en Mai 1987

In May 1987, when I was still working with a anglo-German truck company, a driver took me to London and there I found myself exploring, testing my knowledge of English. Shortly afterwards, I jotted some notes about my trip and used them later for my novel : Souvenir of Germany. My protagonist Tatiana Arnold takes exactly the same trip, albeit in December 1986 and this is what she sees in London:

Friday the 19th, while Tatiana was having breakfast the next morning, - toast, orange marmalade and black tea, it was very cold outside. Despite the winter showers, she had planned to explore the Sherlock Holmes Museum after visiting HMV on Oxford Street, the world’s largest record store. All her favourites were there: Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, America, Ralph McTell, Gerry Rafferty. She bought a CD with Gerry Rafferty’s singles "Baker Street" and Ralph McTell’s "Streets of London" as well as a CD of Christmas carols. She told herself that she had made a very good choice and was eager to listen to her music on her CD player at home. For lunch she went to the Selfridges Café and ordered a quiche and a melon and sweet-corn salad. ...

Then she explored Baker Street - that’s where the legendary fictional detective Sherlock Holmes lived. She was a fan and never missed any episode of the TV show with Jeremy Brett. To her great disappointment, only an oval sign paid tribute to Sherlock Holmes because in 221b there was an administrative building. The staff of the eponymous hotel informed him that in the past there had been a museum but that it had closed due to bankruptcy two years earlier.

a new privately run Sherlock Holmes museum opened in 1990 and is situated in Baker Street and bears the number 221B by permission of the City of Westminister although it lies between numbers 237 and 241, near the north end of Baker Street in central London close to Regent Park. Of course I visited that one as well, but that's another story.

En mai 1987, alors que je travaillais encore pour une compagnie de camions anglo-allemande, un chauffeur-routier m’emmena à Londres et je m'étais retrouvée là à explorer, à tester mes connaissances en anglais. Peu après, j’ai pris des notes sur mon voyage et je les ai utilisées plus tard pour mon roman : Souvenir d’Allemagne (qui figure dans la trilogie Les Voyageurs). Ma protagoniste Tatiana Arnold fait exactement le même voyage, mais en décembre 1986 et voici ce qu’elle voit à Londres :

"Alors que Tatiana prenait le petit déjeuner le lendemain matin, le vendredi 19, - pain grillé, marmelade d'orange et thé noir, il faisait très froid dehors. Malgré les averses hivernales, elle avait prévu d'explorer le musée Sherlock Holmes après avoir visité HMV sur Oxford Street, réputé être le plus grand disquaire au monde. Tous ses favoris étaient là : Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, America, Ralph McTell, Gerry Rafferty. Elle acheta un CD avec les singles « Baker Street » de Gerry Rafferty et «Streets of London » de Ralph McTell ainsi qu'un CD de cantiques de Noël. Elle se dit qu'elle avait fait un très bon choix et avait hâte d'écouter sa musique sur son lecteur CD à la maison. Pour le déjeuner, elle se rendit au Selfridges Café et commanda une quiche et une salade de melon et de maïs. ...

Puis elle explora Baker Street - c'est là que le légendaire détective fictif Sherlock Holmes avait vécu. Elle était fan et ne ratait jamais aucun épisode de la série télévisée avec Jeremy Brett. À sa grande déception, seule une enseigne ovale rendait hommage à Sherlock Holmes car au 221b se trouvait un bâtiment administratif. Le personnel de l'hôtel éponyme l'informa qu'autrefois, il y avait eu un musée mais qu'il avait fermé pour cause de faillite deux ans auparavant." Un nouveau musée privé Sherlock Holmes ouvrit ses portes en 1990 , il se situe dans la rue Baker Street et porte le numéro 221B avec la permission de la Ville de Westminister bien qu’il se trouve entre les numéros 237 et 241, près de l’extrémité nord de la rue Baker Street dans le centre de Londres près de Regent Park. Bien sûr que je l'ai visité, mais ça c’est une autre histoire.
